The Ormylia Foundation, Center for Social Advancement, Disease Prevention and Medical Research, “Panagia Philanthropini” was founded in 1982, eight years after the foundation of the Orthodox Christian Convent of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Ormylia, Chalkidike, northern Greece. The Founder of the Center is the blessed Elder Aimilianos the spiritual father of the Convent and the Monastery of Simonos Petras on Mount Athos. Medical services began in 1991. In 2006 the Ormylia Foundation was established as a non for profit private foundation by a special law passed by the Hellenic Parliament.
The mission of the Center is to comfort and alleviate the suffering of human beings without preference to race, religion, gender, or creed. Serving others through the use of medical science has been a special mission of Orthodox Monasticism since early Christian times. These services contribute to the development of human beings made in God’s image supporting those in need through practical works of love. It is in this spirit that the Center provides high quality standardized cancer screening for the underserved. Together with the medical services, spiritual and social support, humanitarian aid, public health education, works of love for the people of northern Greece and beyond are offered.
The Center of Panagia Philanthropini has another dimension of significant cultural and scientific importance, the Art Diagnostic for Byzantine Works of Art.
